TLDR Dermal papilla cells can help regrow hair and are promising for hair loss treatments.
Dermal papilla cells (DPCs) are crucial in hair follicle formation and regulation, possessing stem cell characteristics that allow them to be cultured and expanded in vitro. They can be reprogrammed into induced pluripotent stem cells and are a key source of skin-derived precursors. DPCs can regenerate skin and hair follicles and induce new hair follicle formation when implanted in hairless skin. Subcutaneous injection of DPCs and their exosomes promotes hair growth. This review highlights the potential of DPCs in cell therapy for hair loss and discusses recent advances and challenges in translating basic research into practical applications.

Scalp biopsies are crucial for diagnosing hair loss conditions like Diffuse Unpatterned Alopecia (DUPA) and retrograde hair loss, as treatments like finasteride and dutasteride may not be effective if other conditions are present. Combining PPAR-GAMMA agonists with retinoids could improve treatments for conditions like Lichen Planopilaris.
