TLDR Natural compounds from Chinese herbs may safely promote hair growth and treat common hair loss.
The document reviews the potential of natural bioactive compounds in treating androgenetic alopecia (AGA), a common form of hair loss. AGA can be an early warning sign of systemic diseases like prostate cancer and metabolic syndrome. Current treatments include surgery, drug therapy, and laser treatments, but these can have side effects. The review emphasizes the potential of natural bioactive compounds, particularly triterpenoids and saponin compounds found in Chinese herbs, due to their efficacy and safety. The compounds discussed, including baicalin, ginsenosides, curcumin, liposomal honokiol, and oleanolic acid, promote hair growth and treat alopecia by activating the Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway, inhibiting 5α-reductase activity, and reducing dihydrotestosterone (DHT). They also prevent hair follicle cell apoptosis, prolong the growth phase, and regulate testosterone metabolism. However, more research is needed to understand the synergistic promotion between the various signaling pathways involved in the regulation of different plant extracts.
