TLDR Perilla frutescens, an East Asian plant, contains 400 bioactive compounds that have various health benefits, including anti-inflammatory, antidepressant, and anticancer effects, and can treat conditions like diabetes, skin allergies, and neurological disorders.
The review paper discusses the pharmacological properties of Perilla frutescens, a plant cultivated in East Asian countries. The plant contains approximately 400 different bioactive compounds found in its leaves, seeds, roots, and aerial parts. These compounds have shown various enzyme-inhibition properties and exhibited strong anti-inflammatory, antidepressant, anti-spasmodic, anticancer, antioxidant, antimicrobial, insecticidal, neuroprotective, and hepatoprotective effects. They are used in the treatment of numerous conditions, including diabetes and its complications, hyperuricemia in gout patients, skin inflammation, skin allergy, atopic dermatitis, periodontosis, androgenic alopecia, gastric inflammation, oesophagitis, carcinogenesis, cardiovascular, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and cerebral ischemic disorders. Notably, the butanolic fraction of P. frutescens extract promoted hair regrowth in mice, primarily due to its active constituent, rosmarinic acid.
