TLDR COVID-19 can cause temporary hair loss, often starting around 7-8 weeks after recovery, with factors like Vitamin D deficiency, other diseases, medication, and stress potentially contributing.
The 2021 study investigated the link between COVID-19 and telogen effluvium, a temporary hair loss condition, in 120 recovered patients, finding that 58% experienced hair loss 2-3 months post-recovery. A larger cross-sectional study of 526 recovered patients with documented telogen effluvium found the average onset of hair loss to be 7.65 weeks post-recovery. Common findings among these patients included Vitamin D deficiency (24.3%), androgenetic alopecia (78.2%), and grade III COVID-19 severity. The study concluded that while COVID-19 can trigger telogen effluvium, other factors such as associated diseases, drug intake, and emotional stress may also contribute.
