TLDR Astragaloside IV may help prevent hair loss by blocking a specific pathway that leads to cell death.
A decade ago, a study was conducted on the effects of Astragaloside IV, a compound from the Astragalus membranaceus plant, on hair loss. The compound was found to inhibit Fas/Fas L-mediated apoptotic signaling, a pathway leading to cell death and implicated in hair loss. Astragaloside IV was shown to promote hair growth by preventing apoptosis of dermal papilla cells, crucial for hair growth and cycling. The study also involved treating the skin of depilated mice with Astragaloside IV for 14 days, resulting in reduced TUNEL-positive cells, blocked procaspase-8, inhibited caspase-3 and procaspase-9 activities, and modulated expressions of KGF, p21, TNF-α, and IL-1β. These findings suggest Astragaloside IV could potentially be an alternative therapy for hair loss. The compound was also found to reduce levels of TNF-α and IL-1β, proteins that inhibit hair growth, and increase expression of KGF, a protein promoting hair follicle proliferation. The study concluded Astragaloside IV could potentially treat hair loss conditions like alopecia, effluvium, and hirsutism. The number of participants was not mentioned.
