TLDR Metabolic syndrome is more common in people with early-onset androgenic alopecia.
The study investigated the link between metabolic syndrome and early-onset androgenic alopecia in 85 cases and 85 controls in a southern Indian city. It found that metabolic syndrome was significantly more common in patients with androgenic alopecia (22.4%) compared to controls (9.4%). Key components like central obesity, hypertension, and reduced HDL cholesterol were notably higher in the alopecia group. The study suggested that early screening and interventions for metabolic syndrome in patients with androgenic alopecia could help prevent cardiovascular disease. However, the small sample size and reliance on patient history for the duration of alopecia were noted as limitations.
