Low-Level Laser Therapy and Hair Regrowth: An Evidence-Based Review

    TLDR Low-level laser therapy is safe and can increase hair growth for male and female pattern hair loss.
    The 2015 review article assessed the effectiveness of low-level laser therapy (LLLT) for treating various types of alopecia, including male and female pattern hair loss. It included 21 studies, with 5 being randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that showed a positive effect of LLLT on hair regrowth, with increases in hair counts up to 37% in the treatment groups. The RCTs had moderate to high quality but had some methodological concerns. The review concluded that FDA-cleared LLLT devices are safe and effective for MPHL and FPHL patients who did not respond to standard treatments. However, the efficacy of LLLT for other types of alopecia and the optimal treatment parameters require further investigation through well-designed RCTs adhering to CONSORT standards. No serious adverse events were reported, and side effects were minimal. Further studies are needed to fully understand the mechanisms of LLLT and to consider it as a first-line therapy for hair loss.
