TLDR Red light therapy is safe and effectively increases hair growth in women with hair loss.
In a 2014 study, 42 women aged 18-60 with androgenetic alopecia were treated with Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) to assess its effectiveness in promoting hair growth. The participants were divided into an active group of 24 women, who received treatment with a device emitting red light at 655 nm, and a placebo group of 18 women, who received treatment with non-functional lights. After 16 weeks and 60 treatments, the active group experienced a significant 37% increase in hair counts compared to the placebo group. The study concluded that LLLT is a safe and effective treatment for female pattern hair loss, with no reported side effects, and is suitable for home use. The results were consistent with a previous study on men, which showed a 35% increase in hair counts.

Key treatments for hair preservation include minoxidil, finasteride/dutasteride, and microneedling, with additional options like specific shampoos, oils, biotin, zinc, tretinoin, clascoterone, and low-level laser therapy. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle, reducing stress, and addressing nutrient deficiencies can also support hair health.
