TLDR Different stem cells are key for hair growth and health, and understanding their regulation could help treat hair loss.
The review article discusses the role of different types of stem cells in hair growth and skin health. Hair follicle stem cells, melanocyte stem cells, and sebaceous gland stem cells are crucial for maintaining hair growth cycles, skin and hair pigmentation, and skin barrier respectively. These stem cells are regulated by various factors including those secreted by the niche components around the hair follicles, immune-mediated damage signals, aging, metabolic status, and stress. The study also identifies several molecular mechanisms, such as Wnt/β-catenin, Shh, BMP, and Notch signaling pathways, that regulate these stem cell dynamics. Dysfunctional hair follicle niches can negatively impact the hair growth cycle, pigmentation, or sebum production. Understanding these regulatory mechanisms could lead to new treatments for hair loss and alopecia.
