    GlossaryHair Pigmentation

natural hair color determined by melanin in hair follicles

Hair pigmentation refers to the natural color of hair, which is determined by the type and amount of melanin produced by melanocytes in the hair follicles. There are two main types of melanin: eumelanin, which gives hair black or brown color, and pheomelanin, which imparts red or yellow hues. The balance and concentration of these pigments result in the wide variety of hair colors seen in humans.
