TLDR Gray hair can potentially be reversed, leading to new treatments.
Hair graying, a visible sign of aging due to reduced melanogenesis, significantly affects mental health and social life, with hair dyes being the only current remedy. Contrary to the belief that large-scale reversal of gray hair is rare, recent findings suggest that individual gray hair darkening is common, indicating potential for broader reversal. This article reviews the regulation of melanogenesis and instances of hair repigmentation linked to factors like monoclonal antibodies, tyrosine kinase inhibitors, immunomodulators, other drugs, micro-injury, and tumors. It provides insights for future research on melanogenesis modulation and proposes new clinical therapies, particularly topical treatments.
