TLDR Using patients' own fat-derived cells to treat alopecia areata significantly improved hair growth and was safe.
In a 2018 study, 20 patients with alopecia areata were treated with autologous adipose-derived stromal vascular cells (ADSVCs). The treatment led to significant improvements in hair growth, with hair density increasing from 85.1 to 121.1 hair/cm², hair diameter from 60.5 to 80.8μ, and pull-test values decreasing from 4.4 to 0.8, all with P<0.0001. Nineteen out of 20 patients showed improvement, and the treatment was deemed safe and effective. The study was conducted in accordance with ethical standards and all patients provided informed consent. The research was funded by one of the authors and the results are included in the published article and its supplementary files.
