TLDR Androgenetic alopecia is a common hair loss condition influenced by various factors and linked to psychosocial and cardiovascular issues.
Androgenetic alopecia (AGA) is a prevalent hair loss condition in both men and women, influenced by genetic, hormonal, and environmental factors, with significant psychosocial impacts. The review discusses the role of androgens, particularly dihydrotestosterone (DHT), in hair follicle miniaturization, and the involvement of insulin-like growth factor-I and TGF-beta1. AGA is linked to metabolic syndrome, cardiovascular risks, and benign prostatic hyperplasia. Diagnosis involves trichoscopy and laboratory tests, while treatments include finasteride, minoxidil, anti-androgens, hair transplants, and emerging therapies like platelet-rich plasma and laser therapy. Early diagnosis and a combination of treatments are crucial for effective management.
