TLDR Hair loss in older men is linked to higher rates of diabetes and high blood pressure.
This study, conducted on 245 Finnish men aged 63, found that androgenetic alopecia (AGA) was prevalent in 58% of participants and was associated with insulin resistance-related conditions such as hypertension and diabetes. Men with AGA had higher rates of hypertension (61% vs. 45%) and diabetes (21% vs. 12%) compared to those with normal hair. The study suggested that men with AGA might benefit from medical check-ups focusing on insulin resistance-linked disorders. It also highlighted the potential genetic link, as paternal heredity was associated with AGA. Despite these findings, the study acknowledged limitations, including the inability to assess the impact of specific drugs on AGA.
