TLDR Low iron levels are significantly linked to hair loss in women.
The study conducted 6 years ago involved 40 female patients with chronic telogen effluvium (CTE) and female pattern hair loss (FPHL). The research aimed to explore the relationship between serum ferritin levels, an indicator of body iron stores, and these types of hair loss. The results indicated that participants with CTE had significantly lower mean serum ferritin levels compared to those with FPHL. Specifically, 57.5% of participants had iron deficiency, and 15% had iron depletion. The study concluded that there was a significant association between decreased iron stores and hair loss in the studied population. However, further studies with larger sample sizes were recommended to establish a quantitative association between different etiological factors and hair loss in iron-deficient females.
