Androgenetic Alopecia and Cardiovascular Risk Factors in Men and Women: A Comparative Study

    This study compared the cardiovascular risk factors in men and women with androgenetic alopecia (AGA) to those without AGA. The study found that patients with AGA had a higher prevalence of carotid atheromatosis and metabolic syndrome (MS) than control subjects. The prevalence of these cardiovascular risk factors slightly differed between male and female patients with AGA. The study suggests that AGA is associated with higher cardiovascular risk in both male and female groups. The study concluded that cardiovascular screening by MS criteria assessment and carotid ultrasound in male or female patients with early-onset AGA may be useful to detect individuals at risk and start preventive treatment against the development of cardiovascular disease.
