TLDR Androgenetic Alopecia (AGA) greatly lowers quality of life, causing stress and low self-esteem, with those seeking treatment experiencing more impairment.
The study conducted on 110 adults in South-Western Nigeria found that Androgenetic Alopecia (AGA) significantly reduces the quality of life (QoL), causing psychological stress and low self-esteem. 88% of women with mild-to-moderate alopecia reported changes in daily activities and 72% reported loss of self-esteem. Men also reported very low self-esteem. The study found that individuals with AGA who had sought treatment had a more impaired QoL in all five domains (symptoms, emotion, functioning, stigmatization, and self-confidence) compared to those who had never sought or received any form of treatment. The study concludes that more attention should be given to the psychological disturbance and impairment in QoL among individuals with AGA.
