TLDR Both androgenetic alopecia and alopecia areata negatively impact quality of life, with no significant difference between them.
The study compared the quality of life (QoL) of patients with androgenetic alopecia (AGA) and alopecia areata (AA) using specific scales for hair disorders. The Hairdex score was used to evaluate disease-specific QoL in patients with hair disorders. The study found that both AGA and AA negatively impact QoL, with diffuse hair loss having a negative impact on functioning, emotion, self-confidence, and stigmatization. However, there was no statistically significant difference between the two groups in total Hairdex, Hairdex subgroups, or QoL according to age. The study suggests that the effects of hair disorders on QoL should be assessed by specific scales such as Hairdex, which would be more reliable in this case.

Scalp biopsies are crucial for diagnosing hair loss conditions like Diffuse Unpatterned Alopecia (DUPA) and retrograde hair loss, as treatments like finasteride and dutasteride may not be effective if other conditions are present. Combining PPAR-GAMMA agonists with retinoids could improve treatments for conditions like Lichen Planopilaris.
