Hormonal Profile in Indian Men with Premature Androgenetic Alopecia

    The study compared the hormonal profile of 50 Indian men with severe premature balding before 30 years of age with age-matched controls. The results showed decreased levels of SHBG with high free androgen index in cases when compared with the controls. However, there was no statistically significant difference found in serum total testosterone, dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate, follicle-stimulating hormone, luteinizing hormone, and insulin levels. The study concluded that altered hormonal profile may coexist in some men with premature androgenetic alopecia, but it cannot be considered as the male equivalent to polycystic ovary syndrome in females or the metabolic syndrome.
