TLDR Male pattern baldness worsens with age and can be treated with medications like minoxidil and finasteride, but side effects and personalized care are important.
Male androgenetic alopecia (MAA) is a prevalent condition that worsens with age, affecting quality of life and influenced by genetic, hormonal, and environmental factors. Diagnosis is mainly clinical, with trichoscopy and histopathology aiding in atypical cases. Treatments include topical minoxidil, oral finasteride, and dutasteride, with minoxidil effective in both forms. Finasteride and dutasteride, while effective, may cause side effects like decreased libido and depression. Alternative treatments such as intradermotherapy, microinfusion, microneedling, and photobiomodulation show promise but lack strong evidence for long-term efficacy. Platelet-rich plasma therapy is experimental, and nutraceuticals lack support. Hair restoration surgery is viable but requires ongoing treatment. Personalized treatment and informed consent for off-label therapies are crucial.
