TLDR Finasteride effectively increases hair growth in men with AGA, works better for those over 30, and may cause some side effects.
This study followed 118 men with androgenetic alopecia (AGA) who were treated with finasteride 1 mg/day for 10 years. The study found that finasteride produced significant and durable increases in hair growth in men with AGA. Patients older than 30 years showed better hair growth in the long term. Side effects were observed on 5.9% (7) patients, but these effects were not age-related. The most frequent side effect was reduced libido, but only 67% of subjects that reported it interrupted the treatment, whereas all individuals with erection problems interrupted the treatment. The study concluded that finasteride is an effective treatment, especially if taken in the early stages of androgenetic alopecia.
