TLDR 5α-reductase inhibitors can interfere with doping tests by masking banned substances.
The study examined the effects of 5α-reductase inhibitors (5-ARIs), particularly finasteride, on the carbon isotopic composition of testosterone and nandrolone metabolites in doping analysis. Analyzing urine samples from three male volunteers after both acute and chronic finasteride administration, the results indicated that finasteride significantly alters the enzymatic pathways and isotopic profiles of these metabolites. This suggests that 5-ARIs can confound doping tests by masking the presence of banned substances like nandrolone, highlighting the need for careful monitoring to avoid misinterpretation in doping analyses.
