TLDR Finasteride affects urinary steroid profiles and can potentially hide steroid abuse in sports drug testing.
A study conducted 16 years ago found that finasteride, a drug used for hair loss and prostate issues, can affect urinary steroid profiles and potentially mask steroid abuse in sports drug testing by impacting steroid metabolism. The study examined the impact of finasteride on urinary steroid profiles for doping control and discovered that it is a synthetic steroid used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia, alopecia, and acne. The study found that finasteride can affect steroid detection in doping-control analysis by reducing the production of certain steroids and suppressing the excretion of a major metabolite. The study recommends including finasteride in doping control analysis to prevent its misuse in sports.
