Microneedling and Its Use in Hair Loss Disorders: A Systematic Review

December 2021 in “ Dermatology and therapy

TLDR Microneedling helps with hair loss, especially with 5% minoxidil, but more high-quality research is needed.
This systematic review of 22 clinical studies involving 1,127 subjects found that microneedling (MN) is effective in improving hair loss parameters across various hair loss types, particularly when combined with 5% minoxidil. Despite positive outcomes and no serious adverse events, the quality of the data is relatively low due to significant heterogeneity in study designs and procedures. The review calls for more standardized, high-quality research to better understand MN's efficacy and establish best practices.

Key treatments for hair preservation include minoxidil, finasteride/dutasteride, and microneedling, with additional options like specific shampoos, oils, biotin, zinc, tretinoin, clascoterone, and low-level laser therapy. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle, reducing stress, and addressing nutrient deficiencies can also support hair health.

The conversation is about the role of testosterone in hair loss and the effectiveness of different treatments. The conclusion is that DHT is the main culprit for hair loss, and finasteride has been proven to work long-term in maintaining and regrowing hair. Testosterone may have a minor effect, but it is not the primary cause of hair loss.
