TLDR Injecting platelet-rich plasma or applying it with a laser or microneedling can treat hair loss effectively. The laser and microneedling methods cause less pain.
The study involved 60 patients with alopecia areata (AA) and tested three different methods of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) delivery: intradermal injection, fractional carbon dioxide laser (FCL) with topical PRP, and microneedling with topical PRP. All three methods were found to be effective, safe, and inexpensive for treating AA. However, FCL and microneedling methods resulted in significantly lower pain scores compared to intradermal injection, while maintaining the same level of effectiveness. The study concluded that FCL and microneedling could be particularly useful for extensive AA lesions and in children due to their lower pain scores.
