Platelet-Rich Plasma Combined with Intralesional Triamcinolone Acetonide for the Treatment of Alopecia Areata: A Case Report

In 2015, a case study was conducted on a 22-year-old female patient with long-standing alopecia areata, a common autoimmune disease causing non-scarring hair loss. The study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of combining platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and intralesional triamcinolone acetonide (TrA) treatments. The patient's scalp was divided into two halves, with one half receiving both PRP and TrA, and the other half receiving only TrA. After eight treatment sessions over 16 weeks, the half of the scalp treated with both PRP and TrA showed more regrowing hairs and a larger hair fiber diameter compared to the half treated with TrA alone. The study concluded that combining PRP with TrA may have a positive synergistic effect for treating alopecia areata, although further controlled studies with a larger number of patients are needed.
