TLDR Inflammation and fibrosis are not significantly different in pattern hair loss compared to controls.
The study aimed to assess the presence and degree of inflammation and fibrosis in pattern hair loss (PHL) by examining histological sections from 37 PHL cases and comparing them with 45 control scalp excisions. Inflammation was found in 73% of PHL cases and 84% of control cases, while fibrosis was present in 68% of PHL cases and 82.2% of control cases. The study did not find significant differences between the two groups regarding inflammation and fibrosis, challenging the notion that these factors play a significant role in the pathogenesis of PHL. The authors suggest that further research with larger and age-matched controls is necessary to draw more definitive conclusions.

Scalp biopsies are crucial for diagnosing hair loss conditions like Diffuse Unpatterned Alopecia (DUPA) and retrograde hair loss, as treatments like finasteride and dutasteride may not be effective if other conditions are present. Combining PPAR-GAMMA agonists with retinoids could improve treatments for conditions like Lichen Planopilaris.

The conversation discusses the confusion over low testosterone potentially causing hair loss, with users sharing personal experiences and knowledge about hair loss treatments like Finasteride. Some users suggest that hair follicle sensitivity to DHT, not testosterone levels, is the key factor in balding, and others discuss the side effects of hair loss medications.
