TLDR PRP might help with hair growth, but the evidence is weak.
This systematic review and meta-analysis evaluated the efficacy of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) in treating androgenetic alopecia (AGA) and alopecia areata (AA) by analyzing 27 controlled trials involving 1,117 subjects. The results showed that PRP injections increased hair density compared to saline injections (MD, 25.6 hairs/cm²; 95% CI: 2.62-48.57) in AGA patients, but the evidence was rated as low quality due to inconsistency and risk of bias. For AA patients, the benefit of PRP compared to triamcinolone injections was unclear, with very low-quality evidence. No serious adverse events were reported. Overall, the evidence supporting PRP's benefit for alopecia treatment is limited and of low quality.

Scalp biopsies are crucial for diagnosing hair loss conditions like Diffuse Unpatterned Alopecia (DUPA) and retrograde hair loss, as treatments like finasteride and dutasteride may not be effective if other conditions are present. Combining PPAR-GAMMA agonists with retinoids could improve treatments for conditions like Lichen Planopilaris.

Key treatments for hair preservation include minoxidil, finasteride/dutasteride, and microneedling, with additional options like specific shampoos, oils, biotin, zinc, tretinoin, clascoterone, and low-level laser therapy. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle, reducing stress, and addressing nutrient deficiencies can also support hair health.

Potential treatments for hair loss, including Minoxidil, finasteride, RU58841 and various upcoming pharmaceuticals, gene editing and cloning. It is suggested that a cure, if found, would be highly profitable due to the large number of people affected by hair loss globally.

Microneedling and Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) are equally effective for treating androgenetic alopecia, with no additional benefits from PRP over microneedling. Both treatments are safe and well-tolerated.
