TLDR PRP treatment helps hair growth in most cases, but more research needed.
This document is a literature review of the effectiveness of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) treatment for androgenetic alopecia (AGA), a common form of hair loss. The review evaluated 12 studies and concluded that PRP was effective in promoting hair growth in most studies. PRP contains high concentrations of growth factors that stimulate hair regrowth by binding to their respective receptors expressed by stem cells of the hair follicle bulge region and associated tissues. The review also discusses the optimal protocols for PRP production and the addition of activators to the enriched PRP. Overall, PRP shows promise as an alternative treatment for AGA, but more research is needed to determine its efficacy.

Scalp biopsies are crucial for diagnosing hair loss conditions like Diffuse Unpatterned Alopecia (DUPA) and retrograde hair loss, as treatments like finasteride and dutasteride may not be effective if other conditions are present. Combining PPAR-GAMMA agonists with retinoids could improve treatments for conditions like Lichen Planopilaris.

Key treatments for hair preservation include minoxidil, finasteride/dutasteride, and microneedling, with additional options like specific shampoos, oils, biotin, zinc, tretinoin, clascoterone, and low-level laser therapy. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle, reducing stress, and addressing nutrient deficiencies can also support hair health.
