TLDR AA-PRP injections effectively increase hair count and thickness for male pattern hair loss.
The study from 2014 examined the impact of Autologous Activated Platelet Rich Plasma (AA-PRP) injections on male pattern hair loss in ten male patients. The patients received AA-PRP on one half of their scalp and a placebo on the other half. Results showed a significant increase in hair count and density in the AA-PRP treated areas, with a mean increase of 18.0 hairs in the target area and a mean increase in hair density of 27.7 hairs/cm² after three treatments at monthly intervals. Additionally, there was a 20.5% increase in mean hair count and a 31.3% increase in mean hair thickness at three months, which further improved to a 29.2% increase in mean hair count and a 46.4% increase in mean hair thickness at six months. Histomorphometric analysis revealed increased epidermis thickness, hair follicle number, and cell proliferation in the treated areas, along with a slight increase in small blood vessels around hair follicles. The study concluded that AA-PRP injections are a safe and effective treatment for pattern hair loss, stimulating follicular and perifollicular angiogenesis without major side effects.
