TLDR PRP therapy may increase hair density in pattern hair loss without serious side effects, but more research is needed.
The systematic review evaluated the efficacy and safety of autologous platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy in treating pattern hair loss, analyzing 13 randomized controlled trials with 343 participants. The review found that PRP treatment was associated with an increase in hair density, with a mean difference of 30.35 hairs per square centimeter compared to placebo or no treatment, although the results showed considerable heterogeneity and potential bias. No serious adverse events were reported. The evidence suggested that PRP could be a beneficial low-risk intervention for pattern hair loss, but the review called for more rigorous trials to confirm these findings and to understand the underlying mechanisms, as the increase in hair density was not correlated with platelet count or growth factor levels.
