TLDR Platelet-rich plasma is a safe and effective treatment for hair loss, with fewer relapses than steroid treatment.
The study conducted in 2019 by Waleed Albalat and Howyda M. Ebrahim involved 80 patients with alopecia areata (AA), a condition causing non-scarring patchy hair loss. The patients were divided into two groups: Group I was treated with intralesional corticosteroids (ILCs) and Group II with platelet-rich plasma (PRP). Both treatments resulted in significant hair regrowth, with 65% of Group I and 72.5% of Group II showing improvement of more than 70%. Dermoscopic evaluation revealed significant regrowth of pigmented hair and a decrease in dystrophic hair in both groups. However, at a 6-month follow-up, 5% of patients in Group II had a relapse compared to 25% in Group I. The study concluded that PRP is a safe and promising treatment option for AA.

Someone's brother tried Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) for hair loss; it had minimal effect on hair but improved skin appearance. Microneedling at home was suggested as a more sustainable alternative.
