TLDR Collagen from tilapia scales may improve hair and skin health by reducing stress and inflammation and encouraging hair growth.
The study investigated the effects of collagen hydrolysate (CH) derived from Mozambique tilapia scales on hair and skin health in human dermal papilla cells and C57BL/6 mice. CH was found to increase catalase activity, IGF-1 and VEGF levels, and decrease TGF-β1, TNF-α, and IL-1β expression. In mice, CH improved hair growth index, length, diameter, weight, and density, and reduced hair damage. It also up-regulated IGF-1, VEGF, Elastin, and HAS2 mRNA expression while down-regulating TNF-α and IL-1β. The study concluded that CH has potential in alleviating oxidative stress, promoting hair growth, and enhancing skin health.
