TLDR The Asian herbal mix with Houttuynia cordata, Perilla frutescens, and green tea helped grow hair in mice.
In the 2017 study, a traditional Asian herbal complex containing Houttuynia cordata Thunb, Perilla frutescens Var. acuta, and green tea was tested on C57BL/6 mice for its hair growth-promoting effects. The mice were divided into groups and treated with either 200 mg/kg or 400 mg/kg of the herbal complex, a negative control, or a positive control with finasteride. Results showed significant hair growth in the herbal complex-treated groups, with the 400 mg/kg group showing the most pronounced effects. Histological examinations indicated an increased number of hair follicles and diameter, while Western blot analysis revealed higher levels of IGF-1 and lower levels of TGF-β1, suggesting the herbal complex's potential to promote hair growth by modulating these growth factors. The study concluded that the herbal complex could be effective in hair regeneration, with no significant side effects observed, but noted the need for further research due to limitations such as the small sample size and lack of data on topical application.
