TLDR Coffee berry extract may help slow skin aging and prevent hair loss.
The study investigated the anti-aging potential of coffee berry extract (CBE) on skin and hair cells. It found that CBE had lower toxicity and higher cell proliferation than caffeine and chlorogenic acid. CBE also showed higher antioxidant activity and nitric oxide inhibition activities than caffeine, but lower than chlorogenic acid. Importantly, CBE had the highest significant anti-collagenase activity, which is key in slowing down skin aging, and its 5α-reductase inhibition activity, associated with hair loss, was comparable to that of chlorogenic acid. CBE also stimulated hair-related gene expression, particularly insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1), keratinocyte growth factor (KGF) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). The results suggest that CBE could be beneficial for applications in anti-aging skin and hair care products.
