TLDR Asiasari radix extract promotes hair growth and increases protein synthesis and cell proliferation.
In 2005, researchers studied the effects of Asiasari radix extract on hair growth, using 45 plant extracts and identifying Asiasari radix as the most effective. The study involved six-week-old female C57BL/6 and C3H mice, which received daily topical applications of the extract for 30 and 45 days. The extract not only promoted hair growth in these mice but also increased protein synthesis in cultured murine vibrissae follicles and the proliferation of human keratinocyte (HaCaT) and dermal papilla (DP) cells in vitro. Furthermore, it upregulated the expression of Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF) in DP cells. Although the extract did not inhibit the enzyme type II 5α-reductase associated with hair loss, it did enhance cellular proliferation and VEGF expression, suggesting its potential as a hair growth-promoting agent.
