TLDR Leontopodium alpinum extract may help reduce hair shedding by keeping hair in the growth phase longer.
The study examined the impact of Leontopodium alpinum extract on human hair follicles by treating anagen VI scalp hair follicles from three individuals with 0.001% of the extract and monitoring changes over 5 days. The extract led to a significant increase in the number of hair follicles remaining in the anagen phase, enhanced proliferation of hair matrix keratinocytes, higher alkaline phosphatase activity, and up-regulated expression of versican in the dermal papilla. Additionally, growth factors like IGF-1 and FGF7 were up-regulated in the outer root sheath and/or dermal papilla of female hair follicles. These results suggest that Leontopodium alpinum extract could potentially reduce hair shedding when applied in vivo.
