TLDR Coffee silverskin may be a beneficial and safe ingredient for cosmetics, offering hydration, firmness, and potential hair growth benefits.
The document reviews the potential cosmetic applications of coffee silverskin (CS), a by-product of coffee roasting, and its bioactive compounds such as chlorogenic acids, caffeine, and melanoidins, which have antioxidant, anti-aging, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, anti-cellulite, and anti-hair loss properties. An in vivo study with 20 human volunteers showed that a CS-based cream improved skin hydration and firmness, and CS extracts were found to be non-cytotoxic and increased longevity and resistance to oxidative damage in C. elegans and HaCaT cells. Caffeine in CS also inhibited 5x-reductase, suggesting benefits for hair growth and anti-hair loss therapies. Despite the lack of studies on CS's potential in cosmetics for hair loss, CS is considered safe for cosmetic use, with no skin irritant effects reported in an in vivo patch test with 20 volunteers. The document concludes that CS could be a valuable ingredient for cosmetic formulations, with the caveat that ochratoxin A (OTA) contamination needs to be managed through good practices.
