TLDR Platycladus orientalis leaf extract helps hair grow by activating certain proteins.
The study examines the effects of Platycladus orientalis leaf extract (POLE) on hair growth, particularly through the activation of non-receptor tyrosine kinase ACK1. POLE enhances cell viability and proliferation in human dermal papilla cells (hDPCs) by modulating mRNA and protein expression related to cell proliferation and senescence. It activates growth factor receptors and the Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway, leading to increased production of growth factors like bFGF, KGF, and VEGF. In a clinical trial with 60 participants, a 1% POLE solution significantly increased terminal hair density by +4.01 hairs/cm² over 12 weeks compared to a placebo. These results suggest that POLE could be a promising therapeutic agent for hair growth and hair loss prevention.
