TLDR Pine bark extract helps mice grow hair by reducing inflammation and boosting growth factors.
The study examined the effects of Pinus thunbergii bark extract (PBE), rich in polyphenols and flavonoids, on hair growth in mice. Topical application of 2% PBE significantly promoted hair growth over 17 days, with no adverse effects observed. PBE treatment also modulated inflammatory responses, reducing pro-inflammatory cytokines TNF-α and IL-1β by 37.0% and 49.7% respectively, and increasing anti-inflammatory cytokines IL-4 and IL-13 by 149.6% and 192.8% respectively. Additionally, growth factors IGF-I and VEGF, crucial for hair growth, were significantly increased (280.2% and 254.5% of control group respectively) in the hair follicles following PBE treatment. These findings suggest that 2% PBE could potentially be used as a natural remedy for promoting hair growth and preventing hair loss.
