TLDR Protein tyrosine kinases are key in male pattern baldness, affecting skin structure, hair growth, and immune responses.
The study "Bioinformatic analysis of gene expression data reveals Src family protein tyrosine kinases as key players in androgenetic alopecia" analyzed gene expression data from 14 young males with premature alopecia and 14 healthy volunteers. The researchers identified 2,439 differentially expressed genes (DEGs), with 33 up-regulated and 256 down-regulated. The study found that down-regulated genes play significant roles in the structural makeup of the skin epidermis, hair follicle development, and hair cycle, while up-regulated genes are implicated in immune response activities. The study also identified 25 hub genes that are key in AGA pathology, with 21 being up-regulated and 4 being down-regulated. These genes were associated with immune and inflammatory processes. The study suggests that AGA is driven by a complex interplay between various molecular pathways involving immune system dysregulation and abnormal keratinization. The researchers suggest further investigation into the potential interactions between Src tyrosine kinase family genes, androgen-DHT, Wnt/β-catenin signaling, and the inflammatory response to gain a more comprehensive understanding of AGA pathogenesis.
