TLDR Chronic finasteride use in male rats doesn't strongly cause depression or anxiety due to adaptive stress hormone changes.
This study examined the effects of chronic finasteride administration on depression- and anxiety-like behavior and hippocampal synaptic plasticity in male rats over 21 days. Finasteride induced depression-like behavior in the sucrose preference test and anxiety-like behavior in the elevated plus maze, with a modest decrease in hippocampal long-term potentiation. Plasma corticosterone levels increased after 6 days but normalized after 14 and 21 days. The study concludes that chronic finasteride administration does not robustly induce depression- and anxiety-like behavior, possibly due to adaptive responses in corticosterone levels, highlighting the complex interactions between finasteride, stress hormones, and brain function.

The conversation discusses the side effects of finasteride, including low libido and erectile dysfunction, and the possibility of these effects being permanent, known as post-finasteride syndrome (PFS). Some users report personal experiences with PFS and debate whether the condition is real, with varying opinions on the reversibility of side effects and the role of individual biology.

The user experienced significant hair regrowth over a year using topical finasteride (0.1%) and minoxidil (7%), along with Ketoconazole shampoo, and recently switched to dutasteride and plans to add oral minoxidil. They managed side effects like oily skin and itchiness with a corticosteroid and chose topical treatments initially to limit systemic exposure.

The individual is considering using Nizoral shampoo, topical finasteride, a derma roller, and minoxidil, but is unsure about the effectiveness of two other products suggested by the dermatologist.
