TLDR Melatonin may help regrow hair, but more consistent research is needed.
This scoping review evaluates the potential of melatonin as a treatment for alopecia, focusing on its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that benefit hair follicle physiology. Preclinical studies show that melatonin promotes follicular stem cell proliferation, modulates signaling pathways, and offers protection against damage. Clinical trials reveal that topical melatonin can increase hair density, extend the anagen phase, and reduce hair shedding with minimal side effects. Despite promising results, the review emphasizes the necessity for standardized clinical trials due to variability in study designs.
