TLDR Melatonin helps grow cashmere goat hair by activating the Wnt10b gene.
The study found that melatonin (MT) can stimulate the growth of secondary hair follicles in Inner Mongolian cashmere goats through the Wnt10b gene. This leads to secondary dehairing. The research aimed to understand the impact of MT on dermal papilla cells (DPC) and the regulation of Wnt10b expression. Results showed that MT promotes DPC proliferation and enhances their activity. When DPC were co-cultured with overexpressed Wnt10b and MT, significant growth promotion was observed. RNA sequencing of overexpressed Wnt10b and control groups revealed the regulatory role of Wnt10b in DPC, identifying numerous genes and pathways, including developmental pathways such as Wnt and MAPK, and processes like hair follicle morphogenesis and hair cycle. This suggests that Wnt10b promotes the growth of secondary hair follicles by regulating crucial factors and pathways in DPC proliferation.

Topical melatonin may help reduce hair loss and increase hair thickness in people with androgenetic alopecia (AGA), with some studies showing positive results. It can be mixed with minoxidil for application, and its effectiveness might be enhanced when used with micro-needling, but results may vary among individuals.
