    GlossaryKeratinocyte

cell producing keratin, forming most of the skin's outer layer

A keratinocyte is a type of cell that makes up the majority of the outer layer of the skin, known as the epidermis. These cells produce keratin, a protein that helps protect the skin from damage, infection, and water loss. For professionals, it's important to note that keratinocytes originate in the basal layer of the epidermis and move upwards, undergoing a process of differentiation and eventually forming the stratum corneum, the outermost layer of dead cells.
