TLDR Hair follicles are essential for skin health, aiding in hair growth, wound healing, and immune function.
Hair follicles played a crucial role in skin health by producing hair fibers, retaining stem cells, promoting cell growth, and aiding in tissue invasion and angiogenesis. They interacted with the skin's immune and neuroendocrine systems, supporting immunosurveillance and sensory perception. Hair follicles also contributed to wound healing and skin repigmentation but could harbor pathogens and contribute to skin neoplasias. The study of hair follicle embryogenesis revealed complex signaling pathways, with defects leading to congenital hair growth disorders. Despite the diminished significance of hair fibers for human survival, the pilosebaceous unit remained vital for various skin functions. Research into hair follicle growth mechanisms, immunomodulatory and antiandrogen drugs, and the hair cycle clock aimed to improve treatments for hair loss and skin health. Hair follicles' regenerative properties could promote wound healing and skin integrity, but they might also contribute to skin neoplasias. Future research was expected to expand, potentially leading to new treatments for hair growth and skin health within 5-10 years.
