TLDR Hair follicle stem cells can help repair damaged nerves.
The study demonstrated that hair follicle stem cells from the vibrissa follicle bulge area in mice could differentiate into Schwann cells, which are essential for nerve regeneration. When these stem cells were implanted into the gap of a severed sciatic nerve in mice, they significantly enhanced nerve regeneration and functional recovery, as shown by improved muscle contraction and walking ability. After 2 months, the transplanted cells integrated into the nerve, forming myelin sheaths around axons and facilitating nerve regrowth. This suggested that hair follicle stem cells could be a viable and accessible source for regenerative medicine, particularly in repairing peripheral nerve injuries.

Microneedling with needle lengths of 1.5mm to 2.5mm to stimulate hair follicle stem cells for potential hair growth. Using needles longer than 2.5mm is not recommended due to risk of puncturing veins in the scalp. A dermastamp is suggested over a roller.

TDM-105795 showed promising hair growth results, with higher efficacy than placebo and minimal side effects. It activates dormant hair follicle stem cells and may maintain gains without immediate loss, unlike minoxidil.

PP405 is a potential hair loss treatment that inhibits mitochondrial pyruvate carriers, increasing lactate dehydrogenase activity and stimulating hair follicle stem cells. In a phase 1 trial, 31% of participants showed over 20% hair density increase with PP405 treatment.
