TLDR Hair follicle regeneration is advancing but still faces challenges in stability and clinical use.
The review highlights recent advancements and challenges in hair follicle regeneration strategies, emphasizing the importance of understanding hair follicle morphogenesis and epithelial-mesenchymal interactions. Traditional treatments are inadequate for patients with limited hair follicle reserves, prompting research into alternative strategies like germ assembling, pluripotent stem cell induction, and bioprinting. Notable progress includes the development of skin organoids from pluripotent stem cells and successful hair follicle integration into bioengineered skin. However, challenges remain in achieving stable hair follicle cycling, optimizing cell sources, and ensuring clinical applicability. Further research is needed to understand the interactions between transplanted constructs and their environment, with the potential to revolutionize hair follicle regeneration and improve treatments for alopecia and skin defects.
