TLDR Platelet-rich plasma is most effective for hair loss treatment and wound healing in skin surgery, but more research is needed for consistent results.
The review article "The Physician's Guide to Platelet-Rich Plasma in Dermatologic Surgery Part II: Clinical Evidence" from 2019 analyzed the use of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) in dermatology, particularly in hair restoration, soft-tissue remodeling, resurfacing, and rejuvenation. The strongest evidence was found for its use in treating androgenetic alopecia, followed by post-procedure wound healing, scar revision, striae, rejuvenation, and dermal filling. However, the study noted a lack of large randomized controlled trials, significant heterogeneity in the variables studied, and a lack of specificity in preparatory protocols. The authors suggested future research should address these issues to improve the effectiveness and consistency of PRP treatments in dermatology.
