TLDR Injecting platelet-rich plasma during hair transplant surgery improves hair regrowth rate, speeds up skin recovery, and enhances hair quality.
In a 2015 study involving 40 male patients undergoing follicular unit extraction hair transplant, it was found that intra-operative platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy significantly improved the outcomes of the procedure. The PRP group showed a 75% hair regrowth rate at 6 months, reduced loss of transplanted hair, faster recovery of the skin, and quicker appearance of new hair. PRP therapy also activated dormant follicles and improved the quality of hair, with multiple roots erupting from the graft as early as 3 months. In contrast, the group that received a saline solution only had a 41% hair regrowth rate. The study concluded that PRP treatment during and after hair transplant has a beneficial effect on the quantity and quality of hair re-growth.
